Elements of Human Flourishing Part 2: Attentional Intelligence

Imagine Clarity is happy to announce the rollout this week of the second part of Elements of Human Flourishing, focused on attentional intelligence. 

In this new series we look at factors affecting attentional balance such as attention deficit, attention hyperactivity and attentional dysfunction which can affect all of us in everyday life. In particular we highlight the large spectrum that may be experienced by individuals in terms of their relaxation, even at similarly high levels of concentration.

The complimentary mental qualities of mindfulness and introspection are explored in their retrospective, present-centered and prospective forms, in particular in the context of mindfulness of breathing and  the observation of the mind itself. We consider both some challenges and benefits of introspection, as seen in the context of age-old contemplative wisdom as well as modern psychology and neuroscience.
From childhood I was compelled to concentrate attention upon myself. This caused me much suffering but, to my present view, it was a blessing in disguise for it taught me to appreciate the inestimable value of introspection in the preservation of life, as well as a means of achievement. The pressure of occupation and the incessant stream of impressions pouring into our consciousness through all the gateways of knowledge make modern existence hazardous in many ways. Most persons are so absorbed in the contemplation of the outside world that they are wholly oblivious to what is passing on within themselves.
